Dear Wilkes Parent,
Thanks for taking the time to go through this note and exploring the web-site. I hope your child has been keeping you informed of what their class has been doing in Physical Education.
Let me share a brief overview of elementary PE on Bainbridge Island. The primary objective of the PE curriculum is to use developmentally appropriate games to provide students maximum opportunities for skill improvement and participation. In order to match the students' skill levels, rules will be modified as necessary to ensure maximum success. A primary focus is to use games and activities that continually involve all students rather than eliminate them, or cause them to wait an inordinate amount of time before being allowed to participate. Skill building games that enhance self-improvement and emphasize cooperation, rather than competition, are the major thrust at this level of physical development.
The typical elementary Physical Education curriculum is composed of five general areas: modified team sports, alternative activities, rhythm, motor skills and cooperative games. Within each of these content areas, our over reaching goal is increased aerobic activity levels in each PE class. In the links below you will find just a few of the numerous benefits of exercise upon the brain and body. Examples of units we will be covering this year include territorial and invasion games, hockey, scooter board activities, balance circuits, ball skills and much more. During the year, I try to add to the PE videos section so that you may see some of the activities your child participates in.
I am really excited for the 2016-17 school year. This will be the second year of our new schedule which will bring us closer to compliance of state law which states elementary age children will receive 100 minutes of PE instruction per week. All specialist classes will be 50 minutes. With a rotating PE schedule, your child will have the equivalent of 480 extra PE minutes or twelve more PE sessions over past years. For the students who start at Wilkes in Kindergarten and stay with us through 4th grade, they will receive and entire years worth of PE compared to previous Wilkes students.
I hope you find that the PE program at Wilkes is something your child looks forward to and which helps them develop physically and emotionally. I look forward to working with your child this year. If you have any questions or concerns, the easiest way to reach me is by e-mail at nstrand@bisd303.org
Sincerely,
Noel Strand
